“So– what’s a guy from the Midwest doing out here?”

That was the first question asked of me when I started interviewing for a job in the mailroom at a Hollywood talent agency. The second question the interviewer asked me was: “Can you dunk?”

I don’t know if I was hired based on my answer to the first question, or the second, but I was hired on the spot—for both the mailroom and the agency’s corporate basketball team.

Within a short period of time, I was pulled out of the mailroom for a position of more responsibility. Two years after that, the William Morris Agency hired me as a television agent.

I don’t believe in luck, but I had sure put myself in a position to be lucky.

It turned out that being a Hollywood agent wasn’t the life for me. I transitioned to a role at Bank of America, managing the portfolios of some of the bank’s biggest clients, and then made my way back to the media business at Tennis Channel (I made my own luck to get that job, too) and then headed up the West Coast for

I launched The Buckeye Group in 2009 as a way to build on two decades’ worth of experience, using everything I know about relationship-based business. I consulted to clients including The Miss America Organization and DirecTV on building partnerships and creating strategies, processes, and operations that would expand and grow their revenue. And it worked! In fact, as an organization, The Buckeye Group generated more than $50 million in new revenue for clients.

Over the last ten years, I noticed a common thread across my career: I had the most success when I could build a strategy that focused on partnerships, and then leverage those relationships to achieve results. It was the combination of outside perspective, industry knowledge, and deep networks that enabled me to create the opportunities that set a clear course for growth. With Billy Goldberg Partners, I translate the same relationship-based approach I’ve used when working with large organizations to small businesses and the c-suite, supporting visionary leaders through their next phase of growth.
